Company history

David Piggins founded Playgolf in 1993. The Company initially concentrated on working in partnership with local authorities to upgrade and operate municipal golf facilities. Relationships included East Yorkshire Borough Council and Manchester City Council.

The Group acquired a private golf club in Leeds in 1998. The club has now been sold, but while it was owned and run by the Group it provided an insight into that aspect of the golf industry and the financial implications of running a golf course.

In 1997 the Company was approached by Peel Holdings plc, the owners of the Trafford Centre in Manchester, to consider a leisure solution to a twenty acre site adjacent to junction 10 of the M60, one of the access points to the Trafford Centre. This resulted in the opening of Playgolf Manchester in December 2000.

In 2001 the Company was approached by Brent Council regarding a proposed development in Northwick Park, Harrow, which led to the commencement of development on Playgolf's first full-size urban golf complex in 2003. This was launched as Playgolf Northwick Park in the autumn of 2005, and has since become a successful model for future Playgolf developments.

In January 2004 the Company acquired Metro Golf, a facility in Hendon, North London, comprising a two-tier driving range, golf school, short golf course and shop.

In 2007 the Company announced that it had signed a joint venture with Kilmartin Property Group to develop a new multi-sports complex at Playgolf East Kilbride, near Glasgow in Scotland, due to open in late 2008.
